“I love my job” By Biniam Getaneh In a survey, 1,500 people were asked same question and were then separated in 2 different categories based on their responses. 1,245 people went into the first category which responded that money was their priority and would consider doing what they want to do later. The other Category, made up of 255 people, preferred going after their passion and trust that money would follow subsequently. Guess what happened to both groups 20 years later? Out of 1,500 people in the whole group, 101 of them became millionaires. It is so common, to hear friends and relatives complaining about work, work place, coworkers etc, a research made in Japan shows there are 20% more heart attacks on Mondays than on any other day. Perhaps this isn’t surprising when you look at how most of us choose our careers. Our local system is even worse. We have few or no choose of carrier. Even if we have the choice we tend to pick the one with a better payoff, but all the rewards we get from our work is largely depend on productivity and few things in life affect productivity, more than passion does. World’s largest chocolate producer, Barry Callebaut’s CEO Patrick De Maeseneire, ones said “Producing great chocolate is all about being passionate,” Passion creates the energy and drive required to do what others think is impossible. Not loving our work is something with far reaching consequences. We want to do more than tolerate our work. We want to enjoy it! Doing what we love to do not only makes us effective but also makes others feel the same. ”Nothing is so contagious as enthusiasm.” Culturally, a career seems to be defined as “a way to make money so that one can afford the quality of life one really wants.” This perspective of career is focused on getting money and forgets the other most important aspects of working; my question is what if we have already secured the money we need for that? Does it mean we don’t do at all? As human we have a sense of contribution or doing something valuable to others we want to have such a fruit in life I am not arguing passion is all we need to do successful job, but it is one of the most important ingredients to accomplish our life’s purpose. Doing work you love supports you to be who you want to be, to do what matters most to you. Marcus Buckingham in his book The One Thing You Need to Know, Emphasized it “The one thing you need to know about sustained individual success: Discover what you don’t like doing and stop doing it.” Think of doing a job that people are willing to pay for it, and you are good at and excited to do with the internal confirmation that you are right, that is your Grate Job. On the 8th habit, Stephen R. Covey teaches greatness in any filed is based on using our talent to meet the need out there, driven by conscience with passion. Let me leave few questions for you that would help to say “I LOVE MY JOB”
“Nothing great in the world has been accomplished without passion.”
